UK invoices don't need to be pretty, but they do need to be specific. HMRC and your client both rely on the same details — a unique sequential number, a clear issue and due date, both parties' details, VAT if you're registered. Get those right and you'll be paid faster and audited less.
Direct answer
Every UK invoice has the same six legal requirements. Below is a template that includes all of them, plus the practical extras — VAT lines, bank details, and late-payment language. Use the key facts, step list and official source links on this page to confirm the decision before you spend money or register anything.

Section 01
What's legally required on a UK invoice
- A unique, sequential invoice number.
- Your business name, address and contact details.
- The client's name and address.
- A clear description of the goods or services.
- The date the invoice is issued, and the date of supply (if different).
- The amount(s) being charged.
- If VAT registered: your VAT number, the VAT rate, the VAT amount per line, and totals before/after VAT.
Section 02
What's smart to add (not legally required)
- Payment due date (default UK terms are 30 days unless stated).
- Bank details with sort code, account number and reference.
- Late-payment clause invoking the Late Payment of Commercial Debts Act.
- PO number if the client uses one.
- Email address for invoice queries.
